Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, THE MESSAGE

If you haven’t yet seen the film White Boy Rick, then you’re missing out on a great character study, but you’re also missing out on a well-done period piece that takes viewers back in time to an era when funk was king.

Well, maybe it wasn’t actually king. But it was certainly a Grandmaster!

The use of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “Scorpio” is an intentional one, offering a nod to Robert Ward, a character whose nickname was – you guessed it – Scorpio. But there’s plenty of other outstanding music within the soundtrack, including tracks by Mtume, Bob James, Edwin Starr, Funkadelic, Carla Thomas, Schooly D, the Bar-Kays, Run-DMC, and the Incredible Bongo Band.

That said, “Scorpio” is one of those songs that Grandmaster Flash fans may know but which isn’t necessarily one that casual radio listeners would recognize. As such, we’d recommend that you take a listen to THE MESSAGE in its entirety and educate yourself completely.
