It’s time once again to shine a spotlight on a new vinyl reissue that’s being made available strictly through Walmart, and the latest LP to get such an exclusive release is a best-of collection from the band who once inspired a character on What’s Happening!! to pose the immortal question, “Which Doobie you be?”

Originally released in 1976, BEST OF THE DOOBIES bears no actual subtitle, but for those who know the band’s history, it might as well have the parenthetical addition “BUT MOSTLY BEFORE MICHAEL McDONALD,” since McDonald made his recording debut with the band on TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS, the last Doobie Brothers album released before this best-of landed on record store shelves. But just because the majority of the material comes pre-McDonald in no way lessens its impact, since you’re talking about songs like “China Grove,” “Black Water,” and...
