Happy Anniversary: Sean Paul, THE TRINITY

12 years ago today, Sean Paul released his third LP, an effort which found him scoring his second consecutive platinum-selling album as well as his second #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Recorded from start to finish on the island of Jamaica, THE TRINITY found Sean Paul working with a variety of different producers, including Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett, Renaissance Crew, Rohan “Jah Snowcone” Fuller, Steven “Lenky” Marsden, Craig “Leftside” Parks, and Supa Dupes. For those who may not be familiar with Jamaican producers, allow us to assure you that, no, we did not make up any of those nicknames, not even “Jah Snowcone,” although we really wish we could take credit for that one, because it’s awesome. In regards to the album’s title, Sean Paul has said that it’s a reference to the fact that it’s his third album, it took three years to make, and it was “all done right here in the Third World.”

A remarkable six singles were released from THE TRINITY by the time all of the promotion for the album was said and done, three of which – “We Be Burnin’,” “Temperature,” and Give It Up To Me” – climbed into the top 10. It was “Temperature,” however, that made it all the way to the top spot, with the single going triple platinum. The original release of the album featured vocal contributions from Wayne Marshall, Nina Sky, Tami Chynn, and Looga Man and Kid Kurup, but a special expanded edition of the album was later released in the UK which also found Sean Paul working with Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, and Rhianna.

To be make sure that we’re going out with a bang, we thought we’d save the most notable thing about THE TRINITY for last: not only did it top the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, but at the time of its release, it was the highest ever reggae / Dancehall debut and single week sales for a reggae artist in SoundScan history. Holy TRINITY, that’s amazing…
