When renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp wanted new music for her 1981 Broadway production THE CATHERINE WHEEL, she turned to David Byrne, whose band Talking Heads had just released the African rhythm- infused REMAIN IN LIGHT. “I would send Twyla basic tracks, sometimes just a bass and guitar or a basic rhythm part, within a day or two after I'd recorded it,” noted the singer-songwriter. “So she was able to work with those tracks while I worked at building up layers and, when the music required it, writing lyrics and recording vocals.” As impressive as the synergy between music and movement was, Byrne's score stands strongly on its own and features appearances by the likes of Brian Eno, Bernie Worrell and fellow Head Jerry Harrison. THE COMPLETE SCORE FROM THE CATHERINE WHEEL will be available again on vinyl for Record Store Day 2023.
