This past weekend, moviegoers were treated to a film by director Simon Curtis about a Formula One driver who uses the techniques that make him a success on the track in order to succeed in other aspects of his life. But you wouldn’t necessarily know that from the commercials, because you’re too busy saying, “Oh, look at the cute dog! What a cutie! Oh, he’s so CUTE!

Yes, we’re talking about The Art of Racing in the Rain, a.k.a. that movie with the golden retriever whose inner monologue sounds suspiciously like Kevin Costner (because that’s who voices him), and if you’ve seen it and heard a song on the soundtrack with such gorgeous harmonies that it almost moved you to tears, well, we’re here to help you identify it.

Okay, fine, we kind of spoiled the artist in the title of this piece – yes, it’s Crosby, Stills & Nash – but we haven’t spoiled the song’s name yet.

The track in question is called “Helplessly Hoping,” and it can be found on the trio’s self-titled debut album. It’s been covered by a variety of artists over the years, including Richie Havens, Judy Collins, Ocean, and the Australian band TaxiRide, but let’s face it: nobody nails those harmonies quite like CSN.
