Ed Cherney

Given that he was an engineer on Rhino’s recent Miles Davis release, RUBBERBAND, Ed Cherney’s name is one that’s been uttered around our offices with some regularity, but when he succumbed to cancer on Tuesday, we knew it wasn’t just his work on the Davis material that we’d be mentioning when we offered up the farewell that you’re reading right now.

Cherney, a Chicago native who relocated to Los Angeles more than a few years back, had such a list of credits to his name that any music fan would look at it and immediately enter a state of mourning. We’re only going to offer up a list of some of the folks who are in Rhino’s catalog, but we’re pretty sure that’ll be plenty sufficient to make you miss him:

•    Ry Cooder
•    David Lindley and El Rayo-X
•    Michael McDonald
•    James Ingram
•    Eric Clapton
•    The B-52’s
•    Ofra Haza
•    Jackson Browne
•    Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks
•    The Manhattan Transfer
•    Randy Newman
•    Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
•    Little Feat
•    Poe
•    Bette Midler
•    Patti Austin
•    Goo Goo Dolls
•    Fleetwood Mac
•    Michael Buble

As it happens, Miles Davis’s RUBBERBAND is Cherney’s last-listed credit as an engineer on Discogs.com, but as you can see, there’s so much that preceded it that his loss will be felt in a big way amongst music fans.

R.I.P., Ed. Glad we got to work with you, and thanks for bringing your best all the way to the last...
