Out Now: Prince, 1999

Prince spent so much of the ‘ 80s as a music icon that it’s sometimes easy to forget exactly when he made the jump from relatively-successful R&B artist to full-fledged pop superstar, but we can tell you exactly when it happened: in 1982, after he released his 1999 album. With the album’s trifecta of top-tier hits, “Little Red Corvette,” “1999,” and “Delirious,” Prince transformed himself into one of the most popular singers in the music business, a situation which shifted into overdrive with the release of his next album, PURPLE RAIN.

Of course, we’ve already released a deluxe edition of PURPLE RAIN, but now it’s time for Prince fans to bask in the glory of Rhino’s reissue of 1999, now available in a remastered edition, a deluxe edition, and a super deluxe edition.

•    Super Deluxe Edition (5CD+DVD / 10LP+DVD / audio-only download and streaming): 65 tracks spread across 5 CDs or 10 LPs, depending on which version you prefer, including 23 previously unissued studio tracks and a complete live performance from the 1999 tour, recorded in Detroit on November 30, 1982. The DVD, meanwhile, contains a different live performance, this one recorded in Houston on December 29, 1982. There’s also a book containing previous-unseen handwritten lyrics, photographs from the era, and liner notes by Rolling Stone critic David Fricke, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Minneapolis historian and radio host Andrea Swensson, and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl.
