On this day in 1965, Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore convened in L.A.'s World Pacific studios to make The Doors' first demo recordings. Though the sound and lineup would soon change (guitarist Robby Krieger joined a few weeks later), the band already had some great songs, among them “End Of The Night.” The quartet's self-titled debut builds on that with even more striking originals including “Break On Through (To The Other Side),” “Soul Kitchen” and the No.1 hit “Light My Fire.” Steeped in urban electricity, nocturnal visions, blues and Brecht, THE DOORS was one of the defining albums of 1967; several decades and millions of sales later, the collection's primal power remains undiminished.
